State Laboratory for Livestock Marine and Agri Products, Ernakulam (SLMAP) is an apex Food Testing Laboratory under the Animal Husbandry Department, Government of Kerala. The Laboratory was established in the year 1982 Vide G.O (Rt) 2084/82/AD, dated , 05/08/1981 of Govt of Kerala with the objectives of ensuring quality of Animal Products inclusive of Meat, Poultry & Marine & Agri Products intended for export, import as well as domestic use, to provide advisory service on hygiene and sanitation to various processing units all over Kerala and to issue Veterinary Health certificates for export purpose. The lab was upgraded with well-established Microbiology, Chemistry and Molecular Biology divisions, through a central assistance of Rs.300 lakhs in the year 2008. SLMAP is accredited by National Accreditation Board for Laboratories (NABL) as per ISO 17025 : 2017 standards and is currently holding accreditation for 13 tests in three divisions. This is the second lab in India and first lab in the state to obtain Accreditation for Meat Species Identification. SLMAP is also a notified laboratory by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and is guided by Quality Council of India (QCI) and International Accreditation Co-operation (ILAC).

– Providing advisory services on hygiene and sanitation to various processing units throughout Kerala.
– Issuing Veterinary Health certificates for export purposes.
TECHNICAL DIVISIONS UNDER THE INSTITUTIONS
SLMAP with three divisions provide testing services to wide range of Livestock, Marine and Agricultural Products. 750 samples are received and around 1500 tests are performed every month. Annual Income during 2022-2023 was around 63 Lakhs (Rupees Sixty Three Lakhs Only) and the income for the current financial year as on 31-12-2023 has already reached Rs.72,78,853/- (Rupees Seventy Two Lakhs Seven Eight Thousand Eight Hundred and Fifty Three only) .
A. Microbiology Division
Analysis and Screening of Food items , Meat and Meat Products, Marine and Aqua Culture Products and Agricultural Products for the presence of bacteria like Vibrio cholerae, Salmonella enteritidis, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, Fungus, Yeast and Mould.
B. Chemistry Division
Proximate Analysis (Moisture, Ash and Acid insoluble Ash) in Cattle Feed and various Food and Agri Products and Moisture in Meat.
C. Molecular Biology Division
Molecular detection of Vibrio cholera bacteria, Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) testing in various Agricultural Products and Species Identification of Raw Meat through Species specific Polymerase Chain Reaction and PCR RFLP ( Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism).

ADMINISTRATION
The Office administration is carried out by a Deputy Director. A Veterinary Surgeon supervises the technical activities of Molecular Biology lab and another Veterinary Surgeon (Scientific Assistant) supervises the technical activities of Microbiology and Chemistry lab. One Senior Clerk, One Selection Grade Typist and a Clerk Typist helps in the activities of the office.
