A ‘Disease Investigation Unit’ was started in Kannur to co-ordinate the disease investigation process in the northern part of Kerala in the year 1984-85 as per order No.1541/84 AD dated 16-6-1984. The office was headed by a disease investigation officer in the rank of Assistant Director. The disease investigation unit become a part of District Veterinary Centre. When the Veterinary Hospital, Kannur was upgraded to District Veterinary Centre in 1985. The Disease Investigation Unit renamed as Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory as per order No. E 21300/03 dated 7-1-2005 of the Director of Animal Husbandry. Disease Investigation Officer post was interchanged with Deputy Director post as per GO No. 234/2022/AHD dated 12-5-2022 and presently no Disease Investigation Officer post in there. Disease investigation, screening, surveillance and diagnosis is done in the laboratory with the help of various diagnostic tests. Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, Kannur outs as a regional referral laboratory for the 4 northern districts of Kerala ie.,Kozhikkode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.

A team headed by Deputy Director helps in the disease investigation during disease outbreaks not only in animals but also in the case of human disease incidences which has zoonotic importance, thus helps the department to take preventive measures.

Charges for Tests

Rates of the diagnostic tests are as per order of Director of Animal Husbandry vide No. AHD/6513/2021-N1 dated 31-3-2023. Rabies test results are communicated within 6 to 18 hours, LFT results are communicated within 30 minutes and the other diagnostic tests are communicated to the concerned person as early as possible according to the test done.
